Safari on foot at the foot of Mount Meru

Safari on foot at the foot of Mount Meru

Arusha National Park is one of the few parks in northern Tanzania where you can walk among wildlife. Accompanied by an armed ranger, you follow trails across open grassland and through montane forest, close to giraffe, buffalo, zebra, warthog and the black-and-white colobus monkeys that live in the trees.

Walking slows everything down: your guide shows you tracks, plants and birds that are easy to miss from a vehicle, with Mount Meru rising above you.

Canoeing on the Momella Lakes

Canoeing on the Momella Lakes

The walk can be combined with a guided canoe trip on the Small Momella Lake, where you paddle past water birds, hippos and, in season, flamingos, with views of Mount Meru and, on clear days, Mount Kilimanjaro.

Highlights

  • Guided walking safari with an armed park ranger
  • Black-and-white colobus monkeys in the forest
  • Canoeing on the Momella Lakes
  • Views of Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro

Good to know

  • Wear comfortable walking shoes and neutral colours.
  • Canoeing depends on water levels and weather.
  • Perfect as a first or last day of a northern circuit safari.
