An animal paradise inside a volcano

An animal paradise inside a volcano

The Ngorongoro Crater was formed when a huge volcano collapsed millions of years ago. Today its floor is a natural enclosure of grassland, swamps, forest and a soda lake, where wildlife lives all year round.

It is one of the best places in Tanzania to see the endangered black rhino, along with lions, elephants, buffalo, hyenas, zebra, wildebeest and flamingos — often all on the same game drive.

Visiting the crater

Visiting the crater

Most safaris spend a night on the crater rim or in nearby Karatu, then descend early in the morning for a game drive on the crater floor with a picnic lunch. The crater is included in most of our northern circuit safaris and can also be visited on a day trip from Arusha.

Highlights

  • World’s largest intact volcanic caldera
  • Black rhino and the Big Five
  • Lerai forest and the Ngoitokitok hippo pool
  • Maasai communities in the conservation area

Good to know

  • The crater can be visited all year.
  • Mornings on the rim are cool — bring a warm layer.
  • Combine with the Serengeti, Tarangire and Lake Manyara.
